Are you worried about the fact that you may be gaining weight? Are you concerned that you are gaining just one love handle too many? Or perhaps you are getting married and want to lose some weight in order to look and feel fabulous for your big day.

Well it is not always easy to get to a gym and many people feel self conscious about exercising in front of other people. So why not become a secret exerciser? That’s right, you can actually fit in some exercise without people having to know!  And where better to start than the office or where you work.

If you work in for example, a recruitment agency, then you may be sat at a computer desk for much of your working day or dealing with telephone calls. There is nothing wrong with that, many of us do have sedentary working lives, but you can increase your exercise.

For a start make sure that you use the stairs not a lift. Instead of emailing a colleague in the next office, get up and take a short walk down the corridor and you will save a few calories that way.

Make sure that you walk briskly from one floor to another, or if you are on a single storey, then when you go to the toilet or to make yourself a drink, ensure that you walk at a brisk place.

Don’t have the photocopier or printer right by your desk, so you always have to walk a short distance if you want to photocopy something or to collect your printing.

Although none of these activities are earth shattering, they will soon add up to make a difference. Even if you only use up 100 calories a day exercising, then in 35 working days you will have lost 1lb. Over a year that can soon add up ! So get walking today!

Increasingly more and more people are facing up to the very painful experience that is redundancy. It can be a difficult time, since although you may have a redundancy payout, there are still bills to be paid, mortgage payments to be found and life can seem like it has turned round and kicked you right where it hurts.

But sometimes, there is another way of looking at things. Being made redundant can open up new career paths for you. What are your interests and hobbies? Do they offer any potential for you to make a living from them? Can you apply skills that you have picked up in another job to w hole new career? Are there any courses that you could attend?

Sometimes you need to think creatively. If you have always loved helping people have you though about becoming an alternative therapist or an aromatherapist? If you love animals, how about a career working at a veterinary practice?

Many people are deterred from taking on new careers because they look at the period of training and think they can’t afford to lose out on earnings. Well, here is the secret that many people have discovered: just work. Take on low paid jobs if necessary, which don’t demand any intellectual capabilities but pay regularly and if you work in a bar or café, you may even get some good tips. Use this income to put yourself through training and to pay the bills. Yes money will be tight for a while, yes, life may seem like struggle, but aren’t the best things in life worth fighting for? You need to leave your comfort zone and take real chances to get a real reward.

Sign up with a recruitment agency and take any work they can throw at you and devote some time each day to sorting out where you want your career to go. Once you have identified your goals, then you can undertake the necessary training and work towards that dream care

Isn’t it tempting to call in your local StarBucks or CostaCoffee to pick up a nice creamy latte on the way into work? Then perhaps you pop out at lunchtime, to get a drink and then of course, there is that afternoon dip, where you really need to give yourself a caffeine hit.

But have you stopped to consider just how much you may be spending on coffee during the week. If you buy 2 coffees at £3 total per day And that is a pretty conservative figure, that equates to £15 per week.

Think about saving £10 or £15 per week and how soon that could add up to a new pair of shoes or even, if you saved it for a year, a short city break: all on the basis of you saving money on spending coffee!

But just because you stop spending money on coffee doesn’t mean that you have to forego a little luxury. There are lots of little drinks sachets, hot chocolates etc that cost pennies to buy, but can make a really nice, luxurious drink. Yet if you cant live without caffeine, then you also can also get round those caffeine cravings, by taking in a flask of hot coffee, made just the way you like it and top up your caffeine levels during the day.

You will find that you save lots of money and if you are working in a permanent position or you are a temp with a recruitment agency, it really doesn’t matter that you are not seen as the person who is splashing the cash about. These days anything that helps the environment is generally viewed as being quite cool and saving money is also the new ‘must do’, so don’t think that people will think that you are mean, they will probably just copy you!

All over the world times are hard. People are starting to get used to having very little money and job insecurity as well as falling house prices (but sadly, no falling rents) and food costs escalating, have left us all a bit more wary of money than we used to be.

One thing that we now consider doing is saving money. But it is all very well saving a few pence on heating costs or trying not to go out as often, but have you thought about how you can save some serious money on food shopping?

Well using leftover food to take into work as your lunch will save you a lot of money. Buying sandwiches can cost anything between £2 and £5 per day and sometimes you don’t know how much fat and salt are contained in the sandwiches. So if you make your own lunch at home, you know exactly what has gone into it and how healthy it is.

Often people think about packed lunches as jus being sandwiches, but there are other things that you can make to. If you make rice the night before, then add in some peas some chopped vegetables to the leftover rice (if you can, use vegetables that you cooked the night before) and add a dash of sweet chilli sauce, or another preferred sauce and you have a very healthy lunch that is tasty, low in fat and calories and saved you up to £5 on sandwiches. Over a week that could be as much as £25.

If you cook couscous, then use left overs in the same way as you could rice and boiled potatoes left over from the night before, make a really good lunch, if you drizzle then with mayonnaise and add in some chopped chives or chopped spring onion.

When the weather is cold take in a flask of soup and eat with a nice home made sandwich and just think how you are going to spend all the money that you have saved!

Are you the office martyr? Are you the person who comes in early, then doesn’t even leave their desk to take a proper lunch break? Do you then stay late, not even squeezing in a quick coffee break in the afternoon? Do you look at all your colleagues going out for lunch and feel slightly superior. You are far too busy to take a break and you must be the best worker there, if you don’t take any rest breaks during the day, right?

Well no, that is where you are completely wrong! Your colleagues who take a break are all doing the right thing. They take breaks, then they come back to their desks with energy (their lungs are full of oxygen from being outside). They also have rested their eyes and refocused on other things apart from a computer screen. Their brains are rested and they have also had a chance to squeeze in a little bit of exercise by a quick walk in a nearby park or down the High Street.

So they come back to their desks refreshed and then they can work with vigour and with energy. But you? Well you are tired because your brain is fatigued, your eyes are tired and you are also getting just a little tired of that martyr routine.

In other words, by sitting at your desk all the time, you aren’t actually doing yourself any favours. Even your manager probably notices that you don’t take breaks and s/he knows that this will mean you are less productive. It doesn’t matter if you are a temp working for a recruitment agency or a permanent member of staff: you still need a break.

The only option for you now is to start breaking the habits of a lifetime and start taking time out in every working day, just to have a lunch break, a couple of breaks for coffee and a chance to stretch your legs. You will find that your eyes, body and brain are much more energised if you do this. So stop being a martyr and instead, get more productive, by taking a break!
